Holger Rune recalled his entry into the 2021 US Open to jokingly comment on
Jannik Sinner's Gucci bag.
Rune began his campaign with a victory over British wild card George Loffhagen in three sets, winning 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-2. The young star started off strong, not dropping any of his service games. On the other hand, Sinner won his opening match against Argentine player Juan Manuel Cerundolo with a dominant scoreline of 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in just 1 hour and 30 minutes.
One of the most talked-about aspects of the Italian's first match was the Gucci bag he carried onto the Centre Court. Sinner is an ambassador for the brand and entered the court with a personalized bag that wasn't white, marking a precedent as the first time in
Wimbledon history that this has occurred. According to Sinner, the tournament organizers allowed this small change, and he expressed pride in using his personalized bag.
A fan commented on Instagram, comparing Sinner's entrance to Rune's a couple of years ago:
"Not since Holger Rune walking onto Arthur Ashe Stadium with an IKEA bag has someone been as stylish as Jannik Sinner walking onto Wimbledon Centre Court with a Gucci bag."
Holger Rune took the situation in good humor and took the opportunity to laugh about his entrance at the 2021 US Open, where he entered with an IKEA bag, as he shared in his Instagram stories. He even conducted a poll asking people to choose their favorite bag: IKEA or Gucci.
When Rune was asked about the attention-grabbing bag he used, he said, "I think it's a nice bag. I can have all my drinks there and bananas. It just suits me well to go on court."
In the second round, Sinner will face Argentine player Diego Schwartzman, while Rune awaits the winner of the match between Roberto Carballés Baena and Italian qualifier Matteo Arnaldi, who made it into the main draw through the qualifying rounds.
