Jannik
Sinner expressed confidence in his ability to potentially defeat
Novak Djokovic
and believes he is one of the few players capable of doing so.
As the 8th
seed at
Wimbledon, the Italian is guaranteed to avoid higher-ranked players
until at least the quarterfinals. The tournament draw revealed the possibility
of a quarterfinal match between
Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic if both players
progress through their respective sides of the draw.
Djokovic,
entering as the 2nd seed, is the favorite at Wimbledon, having won the last
four editions of the tournament and already securing victories at the
Australian Open and French Open earlier this year.
In the 2022
edition, Sinner and Djokovic faced each other in the quarterfinals, with Sinner
defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round. The 21-year-old Italian won the
first two sets against Djokovic, but the 23-time Grand Slam champion turned the
match around and ultimately triumphed in a five-set battle with a scoreline of
5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Despite
Djokovic's overwhelming favoritism, Sinner is undaunted and has shown
confidence in his ability to secure a victory:
“We young
players must figure out how to get to age 36 & have Novak’s physical shape…
In terms of experience & confidence, he’s the favorite. I don't think many
players can beat him, but I include myself among them,” Sinner said.
Sinner hasn't had significant results in his preparation for Wimbledon. After his
disappointing loss in the second round of the French Open against Daniel
Altmaier, he played in the Libema Open and Halle Open, both resulting in
quarterfinal defeats.
Sinner's
challenge at Wimbledon will begin on Monday against Argentine player Juan
Manuel Cerundolo, who is currently ranked No. 111 in the world. A victory would
set him up to face the winner of the match between Miomir Kecmanovic and Diego
Schwartzman.
