Facundo
Díaz Acosta (No. 87) strengthened his position at home and surprised Chilean
Nicolas Jarry with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to claim his first ATP title at the
Argentina Open. The local player stood confidently against the world No. 21 and
capitalized on the opportunities he had to secure the triumph.
Jarry had
an impressive week, securing victories over Stan Wawrinka (No. 60), Tomas
Etcheverry (27th), and the biggest win of his career against Carlos Alcaraz
(No. 2). On the other hand, the Argentine advanced with wins over Daniel
Altmaier (53rd), Francisco Cerúndolo (22nd), Dusan Lajovic (58th), and Federico
Coria (106th), all in straight sets.
In the
opening game of the match, Diaz Acosta had to save three break points against
him to avoid an early disadvantage against the Chilean. Jarry won the first six
points he played with his serve, but a series of errors followed, causing him
to lose the fourth game, allowing the Argentine to take the lead.
Jarry paid
the price for his mistakes, and although he held his service without facing new
break points, a confident Diaz Acosta did not encounter further issues with his
serve and closed the set 6-3. The difference was marked mainly with the first
serve (79%), winning 78% of them, compared to Jarry's 60% first serve, winning
75%.
The second
set started in the best possible way for the Argentine, who again capitalized
on Jarry's service difficulties and quickly secured a break in the first game.
With Jarry on the ropes, Diaz Acosta was able to find new break points and did
not give his opponent any chances. With the score at 4-3, Jarry had two break
opportunities for the first time since the opening game, but the Argentine
remained calm to hold his service and maintain his lead.
Despite a
good competitive spirit, the Chilean couldn't secure the break. With the score at 5-4, they played a lengthy
game in which Jarry saved 5 match points and squandered a break, but finally,
the match ended in favor of the local with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Diaz Acosta,
who entered the tournament as a wild card and ranked No. 87, will achieve the
best ranking of his career after his first title, appearing on Monday as world
No. 59.
