Australia’s
Thanasi Kokkinakis has revealed that he and
his fellow countryman
Nick Kyrgios are looking for a reunion. The two had a successful
partnership in the past as they went on to win the doubles title at the Australian
Open in 2022.
Kokkinakis and
Kyrgios defeated the pair of fellow
countrymen Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in the final in straight sets with a score
of 7-5, 6-4. Kokkinakis and Kyrgios tried to reunite once again during the Australian
Open 2025.
However, that effort went in vain due to the injury Kyrgios sustained. Kokkinakis has now spoken to the media, as quoted by
Nine.com.au, ahead of the Caulfield Cup, and shared plans to work together once again with Kyrgios. Kokkinakis admitted that the last time, the two had to
part ways after a ‘sad ending’.
"Unfortunately when we played last year we were
nowhere near 100 per cent so we definitely have to run it back," said Kokkinakis.
"We haven't played properly since we won it in 2022, so we'd love to try
and run it back. Hopefully he's in good nick and I'm in good nick and we can do
it."
It will be interesting to see whether the effort this time pays dividends, given Kyrgios’ continued struggles with fitness. The 30-year-old suffered a serious wrist injury in 202,2, which
ruled him out of action for nearly two years. Kyrgios returned to the court late in 2024 to feature on home soil at the first Grand Slam
of the year.
Positive news for Kyrgios' fans
However, that move backfired as Kyrgios lost to Britain’s
Jacob Fearnley in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. Since then, Kyrgios
did not feature any other major events in 2025 and stayed out of action nearly
throughout the season. After that match in Melbourne, Kyrgios admitted that was
probably the last time he featured in the singles category, at least at the
Australian Open. Kyrgios stated it was too painful for him to compete at the
highest level, something he did not enjoyed and something he was not looking
forward to going through again in the near future.
"Realistically I can't really see myself probably
playing singles again here," said Kyrgios in his post-match press
conference after losing in the match against Fearnley. "It was special.
Like taking that in, it was pretty good. I knew that I have doubles, so I kind
of was taking everything in tonight in those moments. It was nuts. I didn't
want to just throw in the towel and walk off or retire. I was hurting physically.
I respect my opponent. The fans waited hours to come see me play. Realistically
I can't see myself playing a singles match here again.
He continued by saying: “I was knocking on the door from
playing some of the biggest events, winning some of the biggest events. To see
how hard I worked in the past year, I didn't think I was going to be back here
anyway playing. I didn't get a wild card. I'm here because I feel like I
deserve to be here. I knew I wasn't 100 per cent going into this match. I'm not
saying that's why I lost. He outplayed me. He outserved me. He returned well.
He did a lot of things amazing. He's played a lot of matches. He's an in-form
player. He's transitioning very nicely. Honestly, the reason I kept playing,
tried to play tonight, was because of the fans. As I said, I don't know how
many times I'm going to be back here again. That's why I didn't have headphones
on, I wasn't listening to music. I walked out there today, wanted to hear the
crowd. There were some special moments.”
