The Rio Open will take place from February 16-22 as part of the popular Golden swing spanning South and Latin America with some of the best tennis players in the world set to put on a show.
The ATP 250 tournament in Brazil closely follows the event in Buenos Aires, with the Argentina Open kicking off this part of the tennis calendar. In Brazil, the attention will be on one man: Joao Fonseca. The Brazilian sensation has enjoyed a lot of popularity in his first couple of years on tour, with flocks of yellow and green fans following his progress in tournaments becoming increasingly more common. This is most certainly the case in Rio de Janeiro with the 19-year-old looking to become the first Brazilian to win the singles event.
He does not enter as the number one seed. That cherished slot is awarded to Francisco Cerundolo, who looks to continue his fine form from the start of 2026 and continue it in South America. After playing in front of a home crowd, he will be motivated and up for another tournament so close to home.
The same could be said for the two-time reigning champion Sebastian Baez. After reaching the final of the ASB Classic, he has shown his credentials of another deep run which could come once more in Brazil. In 2024 he got the better of fellow Argentina Mariano Navone before comfortably disposing of Alexandre Muller last time out.
He goes into the tournament as the fourth seed with Italian Luciano Darderi for the second tournament in a row the number two ranked player in the tournament. He is closely followed by a couple of other Italians in the form of Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Berrettini, both looking to impress in South America. Last year’s finalist, Muller, has again made the trip in an attempt to go one step further.
