Predictions
Samuel Gill, Head Editor for TennisUpToDate.com sees Sebastian Baez being crowned champion.
Sebastian Baez was a true standout at the start of the year in United Cup and other further tournaments and I see him returning home and doing what we know in the trade as a Casper Ruud and clean up in the smaller clay court events.
I see both him and Francisco Cerundolo thriving over the next week or so. Albeit Joao Fonseca can't be counted out, he has dealt with injury issues in recent months.
So Cerundolo and Baez are more dead certainties in a field of in my view only three contenders
** Sebastian Baez
* Francisco Cerundolo, Joao Fonseca
Sebastian Baez winner at Cordoba.
Lucas Michael, Editor for TennisUpToDate.com sees Francisco Cerundolo as the champion in Buenos Aires on home soil.
The Golden swing is set to commence in fine fashion with the Argentina Open hosting what is expected to be a very competitive competition.
The tournament has been blown wide open with the world number five Lorenzo Musetti withdrawing from the event due to an injury picked up in the Australian Open. It is music to the ears of the reigning champion Joao Fonseca, who made his mark this time last year with a thrilling showing.
Now the number three seed, the Brazilian will have a lot of support and will be one of the players to beat. Despite this, he has not kicked off the year with a bang with an opening round defeat in the Australian Open lingering on his mind. The inform player who is featuring in Buenos Aires Is last year’s runner-up Francisco Cerundolo.
The home hero played some very solid tennis in Melbourne and will be hoping to use this momentum to his benefit. Fellow Argentine has already reached a final this year in the ASB Classic, with him already experiencing going deep in an event in 2026.
The Italian tennis fans will be keeping a close eye on this with the number two seed Luciano Darderi, Lorenzo Sonego and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini will be looking to make an impact.
For the champion, I am going to pick a popular winner in the Argentine capital with Cerundolo capitalising on his positive form to pick up a first title since July 2024.
*** Francisco Cerundolo
** Joao Fonseca, Sebastian Baez
* Luciano Darderi, Daniel Altmaier, Matteo Berrettini
