Jannik Sinner has talked of his motivation to achieve more after securing his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the National Bank Canadian Open in Toronto.

Sinner faced Alex de Minaur in the final, and produced a strong performance to win the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. The Italian's clean and powerful shots were on display throughout the match, and de Minaur did his best to fend them off.

However, a break at 4-4 in the first set proved to be crucial, as from there Sinner was able to take the set, and subsequently the match, with relative ease in one hour and 30 minutes. On his way through the tournament, he also defeated Andy Murray, Gael Monfils, and Tommy Paul.

Sinner motivated to 'work harder' by result

Speaking after his win, Sinner expressed his happiness at lifting the trophy at a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time. The 21-year-old has 7 other ATP titles across 250 and 500 events and has reached two other 1000 finals, at the Miami Open in 2021 and 2023.

"It means a lot. It is a great result. One I can share with all the people who are close to me every day. It is a nice moment to share with them and we are doing the right things. This result makes us feel good, stronger and hungry to work even harder in the future," he said.

Sinner also spoke of how handling the pressure well helped him to emerge victorious in Canada.

"Every opponent here is tough to play against. I felt the pressure, but I think I handled it very well. Trying to play point after point. Treating everyone with respect on the court, so I am happy with how I handled the situation," he added.

Sinner rises in the rankings

This victory also means that Sinner rises two places in the ATP rankings, from world No. 8 to No. 6. He replaces Holger Rune, who has moved up to No. 5. Meanwhile, Sinner's opponent de Minaur moves up to twelfth as a result of getting to the final in Toronto.

In terms of other stats, Sinner has now extended his Lexus ATP Head2Head lead against the Australian to 5-0, and his Masters 1000 record has also improved to 18-4.
