Jannik Sinner won the
Sofia Open for a 2nd time on Sunday and the Italian was happy to defend his title and earn valuable points for the ATP Race to Turin.
It's been a good year overall for Jannik Sinner despite the Italian not making a dramatic jump as many predicted him. He had good moments on the Tour as well as a few lacklustre showings but the Italian is still in contention for the ATP Finals in Turin meaning he has been one of the best players on the Tour this year. He made a big step forward by defending his Sofia Open title against Monfils. After the match he said:
“The level was high today. We had long, long rallies and it was physical as well. I am happy to be the winner here in Sofia again. I think it is a very nice tournament. It was the best match [I have played this week] because I had to.”
The match was decided by only one break in each set and reflecting on the close result Sinner admitted that he was a bit luckier than Monfils in the match which helped him greatly:
“It is never easy playing against Gael, we’ve had many tough matches. I think in the crucial moments I was a bit luckier than him, which helped me a lot.”
For Sinner, the focus now shifts to the Indian Wells Masters where there are plenty of points to be won as the event was last held in 2019. The Italian is fighting hard for one of the spots in Turin where he would enjoy the support of the native crowd against the biggest names in tennis.
