"I am missing home" - Kyrgios admits time away from his sick parents is starting to weigh him down

Nick Kyrgios is in the form of his life and notching up milestone after milestone, but the Australian admits he is homesick and missing his parents who are both unwell.

After finishing runner-up in his maiden Grand Slam at Wimbledon, Kyrgios has carried that form over to the North American hard-court swing as he won the Citi Open singles and doubles titles on Sunday.

He has also reached the quarter-final of the National Bank Open (Rogers Cup) in Montreal, beating World No.1 Daniil Medvedev and compatriot Alex De Minaur en route to the last eight, before falling to Hubert Hurkacz.

Kyrgios is set to climb back into the top 30 of the ATP Rankings next week and will be seeded for the US Open after his impressive run, but the time away from his ill parents is starting to weigh him down.

After his win over Medvedev, the 27-year-old wrote “Be strong Ma” on the camera and in the post-match press conference he revealed: “It’s hard because even travelling now, my mom is in hospital at the moment, my dad hasn’t been very well, my brother just had a baby and I don’t get to be there with my family when normal people would like to be with them.

‘It’s hard being from Australia because we can’t travel back and forth. There’s a lot of things people don’t see. They only see me winning, losing, throwing a racket, doing those things. They don’t really understand the challenges that I face or what people on tour face, what’s going on in their personal lives.”

And on the back of his win over De Minaur, the Australian admitted he is feeling the effects of such a long time on the road.

“These days are starting to blend into one another,” he said. “I’m just kind of playing the game, physio, eat, sleep, play. It’s tiring, but that’s the sport. I am missing home a little bit, I’m not going to lie.

“I’ve got my mom and my dad, I haven’t seen [them] in about three months. So I’m missing home but at the same time I know that it’s only a couple of tournaments before I go [back].”

Kyrgios will also compete at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati next week before bringing his North American swing to an end at the US Open, which starts on August 29 in New York.
