Britain’s tennis star
Jack Draper has admitted that he was suffering
from ‘anxiety’ during the semifinal of the
US Open. The 22-year-old is already regarded
as one of the most highly-rated players currently playing in men’s tennis in
the singles category. He is a left-handed player as well, which gives him an added advantage.
Draper recently participated in the US Open 2024, where he
had a fabulous run. His journey finally came to an end on Friday as he lost in
the semifinal to world number one Italy’s
Jannik Sinner in straight sets with a
score of 7-5, 7-6, 6-2. During the match, the Sutton-born star struggled physically
as he vomited three times on the court.
After the match, Draper, while talking to the media,
admitted that he struggled with ‘anxiety’ in the contest. He also stated that
he felt fine before the match started, but it ‘built’ up during the contest.
Draper further admitted that Sinner’s experience of playing similar matches
helped him on the night.
“I think obviously it's a big occasion for me,” he said. “I
definitely felt, even though I generally feel pretty relaxed and stuff, I
definitely felt more excited today, a few more nerves around. I'm definitely
someone who is, I think, quite an anxious human being. I think when you add all
that together sometimes I do feel a bit nausea on court, and I do feel a little
bit sick when it gets tough. I didn't have any problems before the match, but
it obviously just built up. Definitely I'm getting more and more experience as
a player. You just take it all in your stride. Obviously Jannik's been in this
situation a few times now so he can sort of relate to maybe the feelings. It's
difficult. Tennis, or just any sport, is hugely mental and physical.”
