Former world number one Andy Murray has called out legendary tennis star Roger Federer for ‘letting himself go’ since retiring from the sport. The 37-year-old, who is regarded as one of the greatest British players in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category, recently retired from the sport after taking part in the Paris Olympics.
One of Murray's most well-known traits has been his humorous behaviour on social media, where he makes sarcastic comments to laugh at his fans, showing his ability off the court. One such moment arrived most recently when he commented on the post of the former world number one Federer. The former Swiss tennis star, who is in America to watch the ongoing US Open, posted a picture of him enjoying pizza in New York on the social media platform Instagram.
Murray was quick to take a dig at Federer for ‘letting himself go’ after retiring from the sport. “Wow you’ve really let yourself go in retirement. What a shame,” he wrote. The Glasgow-born star, who struggled with fitness concerns throughout his career, finally quit tennis after the recently concluded Paris Olympics. He finished with three Grand Slams, including two Wimbledon titles on the home soil. That’s not it, as Murray also had a more than successful time while playing in the Olympics, where he won two gold medals for his country. Both of those medals came in the singles category in 2012 and in 2016.
On the other hand, Federer, who is regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category, having won as many as 20 Grand Slam titles, retired from the sport in September 2022 after struggling with fitness for a long period of time. He was the first-player ever in the men’s tennis history to win more than 15 Grand Slam titles in the singles category and was also the first one to win 20 major titles as well.
