Andy Murray has hit out at the Grand Slams for allowing the 'amateurish' scheduling to continue which has seen another record be broken at the US Open for latest finish.
In a rematch of their gold medal match, Qinwen Zheng again outlasted Donna Vekic 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 on Arthur Ashe Stadium in one of the matches of the tournament. But the stands were deserted for a reason.
It finished at 2:15am in the morning breaking a record for the latest finish for a women's match in US Open history and it once again gleamed a spotlight on scheduling of women's tennis.
Murray in particular called it a 'total mess' as a whole and that it is 'amateurish'. The tennis scheduling situation is a total mess. It looks so amateurish having matches going on at 2,3 4am. Sort it out," he wrote.
But it has been a theme most of the tournament with Aryna Sabalenka playing past midnight which she also lamented and was highly criticised. This teamed with the fact that it is usually women's tennis that suffers as evidenced by a lack of crowd on Arthur Ashe for one of the ties of the tournament.
It is owed to the day session going long with Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz both playing out four sets as well as Grigor Dimitrov in five. Frances Tiafoe also played out four sets against Alexei Popyrin. Whilst it was the WTA matches that were fairly quick as Aryna Sabalenka eased past Elise Mertens and Emma Navarro defeated Coco Gauff in three.
An interesting state of affairs and when an ex-player like Andy Murray who is a major advocate for women's tennis is calling it out, the issue is very much there. An unwanted record broken and one that shines an unfortunate light on scheduling again.
