Greece’s tennis star
Stefanos Tsitsipas believes that the reason
behind the success of Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic is because of he is always trying
to prove someone wrong.
The 36-year-old is often rated as the greatest player in the
history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era.
Tsitsipas was quoted in a report where he stated that motivation
to prove something to someone is always driving Djokovic to stay hungry for
more success.
"If we go by the numbers, Novak Djokovic is definitely
the best,” he said. “He breaks one record after another. And he keeps the
thirst, while he has nothing left to prove, I mention.
“That's his character. He's never happy. It's like he's
always trying to prove something to someone. I don't know what and to whom.
It's like he wants revenge. His eye shines.”
Talking about who has impacted most youngsters to play tennis
at the highest level, Tsitsipas was of the opinion that it was the former world
number one Switzerland’s Roger Federer.
"(If the criteria is) who has inspired the world the
most and who has had the biggest impact, it's definitely Federer, by a wide
margin,” he said. “I don't think there will be anyone else who can match him.”
Djokovic has recently won his 24th Grand Slam
title after lifting the US Open for the fourth time with a win over the world
number three Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final in straight sets with a
score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
With that victory, the Belgrade-born finished the year with
three Grand Slam titles, an incredible feat to say the least.
His only victory in a
major tournament in 2023 came in the final of Wimbledon where he lost Spain’s
young tennis star Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller with a score of 1–6,
7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
