Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer don't play this year at the National Bank Open in Toronto but Stefanos Tsitsipas is not thinking about it.
The National Bank Open in Toronto took a huge hit when it became known that Federer and Djokovic would not attend the event. To make matters worse Nadal experienced issues with his foot again pulling out of the event on the day of his match.
Title contender Stefanos Tsitsipas was asked about that and his response was:
“I don’t really think about [it]. t is what it is. I mean, if they don’t feel fit and they aren’t ready to play, it’s up to them to decide."
The Greek further said:
“Obviously let’s accept it because it’s a fact, it’s true, they bring a lot of fans to the courts, and they are also the reason why people come and watch these big events. Also, they are a big part of, you know, tennis being where it is now.”
Besides seeing the negatives in it, Tsitispas also sees some positives in the absence. He explained it by saying:
“So, I think there is room for new stars. You know, it’s been a lot about them in recent years, and I think now it’s showing that, you know, things are changing. We see a different generation of players stepping up and showing what they are capable of.”
