Australian tennis coach Darren Cahill has refused to call
Jannik Sinner ‘better’ than
Carlos Alcaraz. Both players are already regarded
as two of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category.
There has been a lot of debate about which player is better
than the other. Recently, former coach of Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, Goran Ivanisevic
called the young Italian tennis star ‘better’ than the young Spaniard because
of his ‘consistency’. However, Sinner’s own coach Cahill has refused to call
the reigning world number one as a superior player to Alcaraz. Cahill also
stated that he has ‘a lot of respect’ for the young Spaniard. “I have a lot of
respect for him,” he said while talking to Italian media outlet Gazzetta Dello
Sport. “I will never say that Sinner is better than Alcaraz or vice versa.”
This is not the first time when Cahill talked about mutual
respect between the two players. Earlier, he also talked about it where he expressed
optimism that the two will compete for the major titles for the next decade. “They both respect each other and like each other and you’ll
see that on the court tomorrow regardless of who wins,” he said back then. “I
think these two young men are going to play each other many, many times in the
next 10 years and this is just another part of their rivalry. I’m looking
forward to it.”
Both Sinner and Alcaraz are going through a fabulous season
as they shared two Grand Slams each. Sinner, who became the world number one earlier
this year after Djokovic was forced to withdraw just before the start of the
quarterfinal of the French Open against Norway’s Casper Ruud because of a knee injury,
won the Australian Open and the US Open titles. On the other hand, Alcaraz went
on to lift the French Open and the Wimbledon titles.
