Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner has been extremely impressive this season, with seven quarterfinal appearances out of eight events. However, his stellar play came to a half as he was forced to withdraw ahead of his quarterfinal match at the ongoing Barcelona Open.
Sinner was scheduled to face compatriot Lorenzo Musetti, but could not compete due to an undisclosed illness. Seeded fourth at the event, Sinner had breezed past Diego Schwartzman in the opening round, before barely overcoming Yoshihito Nishioka in a grueling three-set round of 16 encounter.
Following the hard-fought victory, the World No.8 opted to withdraw from his match against Musetti, claiming he needed to recuperate due to illness and his demanding schedule over the last few weeks.
"I'm sad to withdraw from today's match in Barcelona," said Sinner. "I have been feeling unwell for a few days now. Today the sickness got worse, and I'm not able to play. I will take some time to rest and recover. Thanks for all your support, and good luck to Lorenzo for the rest of the event,"
Sinner will hope to recover in time for the Madrid Open, which runs from April 25-May 07, 2023.
