Jannik
Sinner revealed the unusual gift he gives himself after winning a tournament.
The world No. 2 has had a standout 2024 season with three titles and an
incredible record of 26-2 so far.
The
Italian has translated his excellent form on hard courts to clay tournaments,
showing clear improvements at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where he fell in a controversial
match against eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, and now at the
Madrid Open,
where he comfortably defeated his compatriot Lorenzo Sonego 6-0, 6-3.
Sinner's unexpected celebration
In an
interview with the Financial Times, Sinner was asked if he treats himself to
something special to celebrate a big win, to which the Italian responded:
"A hamburger. I have this thing that when we have a good week we always
eat a hamburger,” he said.
“Honestly,
the one in Australia was really good. In America there are some good places too
– in Cincinnati, Firebirds has a really good hamburger,” Sinner added.
On
another note, Sinner recently commented that he hopes to continue accumulating
several matches on clay to arrive in the best form possible for the French
Open. The Italian was eliminated in the second round in 2023 by German Daniel
Altmaier and suggested that inconsistency cost him the match: “Day by day you
try to get better. When you go to sleep you want to say, okay I have improved,”
he told the Madrid Open podcast.
Jannik Sinner at 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters
“You
can win titles, but most importantly I see myself one year ago and now and I
want to see a different player. To
reach this level, you have to lose sometimes. When you lose, you can see where
you need to improve and you have to improve it,” Sinner said. “Some
matches when I was really close and I lost. Then you realise what you have done
wrong. The close ones you win, you don’t really understand, but you lose and
you can see.”
