Britain’s former number one
Tim Henman has put Italy’s young
tennis star
Jannik Sinner and Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz ‘together’ behind world
number one Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the hunt for winning majors in 2024.
Both Sinner and Alcaraz are two of the most highly-rated players
currently playing in the men’s singles category. While the Spaniard has already
won a couple of Grand Slams despite ageing just 20, the current world number
four has only managed to play in the semifinal of a major tournament once in
his career.
Four-time Wimbledon semifinalist Henman was recently quoted
in a report where he put both Sinner and Alcaraz together just behind Djokovic
in the race for winning Grand Slams in 2024, largely because of the 22-year-old’s
impressive runs in the second half of 2023.
"I would put Djokovic as the clear favourite, there's
no doubt in my mind," said the 49-year-old. "And then second
favourite, I would put Alcaraz and Sinner together. Now, I know Alcaraz has won
a couple of slams, but for me, Sinner, in the last couple of months of 2023, he
played at a different level, a new level for him.
"I think that quality, but also the confidence and
belief from winning those big matches, beating so many top ten players
consecutively, was fantastic," he added. "Look, there's only four
majors next year. I wouldn't be surprised if Djokovic won a couple and Alcaraz
and Sinner won each. So only time will tell."
Sinner had an exceptional end to the season where he went on
to play in the final of the ATP Finals in Turin and lost to Djokovic in straight
sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Later, the 22-year-old went on to play a huge
role in helping Italy in securing their maiden Davis Cup title in more than
four decades.
