World No.63 Marton Fucsovics recorded his first victory over a Top-10 player on Monday, as he upset fourth seed
Daniil Medvedev in the first round at
Roland Garros.
The Hungarian employed a variety of slice and power to frustrate Medvedev, ultimately prevailing with a 6-4 7-6(3) 2-6 6-1 victory on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
“It’s one of my biggest wins tonight,” Fucsovics said after the match. “First time I beat a top-10 player, especially in a Grand Slam."
Medvedev falls to 0-4 lifetime at Roland Garros, as the Russian is yet to win a single match at this event. Prior to this year's tournament, he seemed optimistic and eager to change his fortunes in Paris.
"Yeah, it would be definitely really exciting to get my first win here," he said. "It's something for sure I want to get. Of course, I have to work really hard for it."
Unfortunately, the Russian failed to attain that goal. The match lasted three hours and 17 minutes, with Medvedev smashing a racket out of frustration following the second set tiebreak. Fucsovics, to his credit, maintained his composure even after losing the third set and recovered to close out the match.
"I really wanted to show that I’m a very good player, and I also want to be in the top 10," he revealed after the match.
The Hungarian is set to meet Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who defeated Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-4 6-3 6-0 to advance to the second round.
