Martina Navratilova believes that Jannik Sinner will become 2024 French Open champion if his body manages to hold up amid his recent hip struggles admits the tennis legend.
Sinner goes into the 2024 French Open under some semblance of uncertainty. The Italian ace has had a hip injury since Monte-Carlo, but it manifested itself in Madrid. He aggravated it against Pavel Kotov and played against Karen Khachanov, but had to withdraw from his Quarter-Final with Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The writing was fairly on the wall for Sinner with him not making it to Rome and reports came out about him not being able to play Roland Garros under the fear that if he aggravates it again, he could be out injured for some time and potentially not the same again.
But either this medical advice didn't happen or he has healed up quicker than expected because he was soon back on court and practicing with multiple posts by himself and Darren Cahill on social media. So the proof will be in the pudding, but he still remains up there for many including Navratilova. Alexander Zverev too was also picked if he manages to get past Rafael Nadal.
"I have Sinner if he is healthy. Yeah, I think so, I think he is due. Grew up on the stuff. He slides well. If his body holds up, he still has to have a ton of confidence otherwise," she said on the Tennis Channel Live Desk.
"And I think Zverev, if he gets through Rafa, which and not not get too beat up," she stated.
Sinner himself is feeling good ahead of Roland Garros with the World No.2 saying that his hip diagnosis was only positive. “I don't worry about my hip anymore. The last tests we did were very positive, that's why I'm here. I said I would come only if the hip was in good shape. Overall fitness is not perfect. I haven't played tennis in about three weeks, which is a long time before a Grand Slam. I just try to play day by day."
