America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff has provided an
update about her plans for the rest of the year after her journey came to an
end in the
Wuhan Open. The 21-year-old is already regarded as one of the best
players currently playing in women’s tennis along with the likes of Poland’s
Iga Swiatek and Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.
Gauff has recently taken part in the Wuhan Open, where she
was knocked out after losing in the semifinal to Sabalenka with a score of 1-6,
6-4, 6-4. Talking after the match, the reigning world number three revealed that
she had decided to go home and rest before the start of the WTA Finals. She also
stated that she is hoping to have a much better outing in Beijing next year when
she will have more time to prepare.
"I think I'm going to go home just because it's been
long," she said. “I think I've been here, like, four weeks. Two weeks is
kind of when we have to leave for Riyadh. Yeah, maybe next year. I want to do
well in Beijing. Hopefully I don't have time. But maybe next year I'll have
more time.
Gauff had a mixed campaign. Overall, she managed to win 50
times and suffered 15 defeats in 15 matches. However, she only managed to win
two titles this season. Her first title was the ASB Classic in January, where
she defeated Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the final with a score of 6-7, 6-3,
6-3. Her only other title came in Beijing recently, where she defeated Karolina
Muchova in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-1 and 6-3. Out of
all the four Grand Slams, Gauff played in the semifinal of the Australian Open
and the French Open, and on both occasions, she ended on the losing side. In
the other two Grand Slams, the one-time major title winner was knocked out
after losing in the quarterfinal.
