Mats Wilander spoke to Eurosport about the recent developments in the careers of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal expressing the belief that their winning grand slam time is over.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal won't step onto a tennis court in 2021 anymore as both players have elected no to play in order to heal the nagging injuries they suffered. For Federer, the road ahead is much tougher both in terms of his age and the severity of the injury.
Eurosport tennis analyst spoke about the recent developments saying:
“I don’t think it is the end of an era. It might be the end of winning Grand Slam tournaments but with Rafa and Roland Garros, the love affair he has over there, you can never say it’s the end of that relationship until he has held his rackets on the wall."
Wilander makes a fair point with both players slowly entering stages of their career where winning majors isn't common anymore no matter how good a player is. The younger players are getting better and Novak Djokovic seems far away from hanging it up as well.
Wilanders still expressed his belief that both still have a lot to give to tennis summing up his houghts with:
“But the era of filling the stands with Federer fans and Rafa fans and even Novak fans, that era is still alive. There is a couple more years of that. I am not sure they will be winning any more Grand Slams."
