Britain’s
Katie Boulter has revealed that she is ‘not
surprised’ after seeing fellow countryman
Jack Draper lifting the
Indian Wells
title. The 23-year-old, who is already regarded as one of the most talented
players on the tour in men’s tennis in the singles category, secured the
biggest title of his career on Sunday as he lifted the Indian Wells title after
beating Denmark’s Holger Rune in the final in straight sets with a score of
6-2, 6-2.
It was his first ATP 1000 title in his career. With that
win, he becomes only the second British player after Cameron Norrie. He lifted
the title in 2021 after beating Nikoloz Basilashvili in the final with a score
of 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. The result is a major
turnaround for Draper, who, not so long ago, was struggling with fitness
concerns.
Britain’s women’s tennis player Boulter, who also featured
in the competition and was knocked out after losing in the round of 32 to Elena
Rybakina in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 7-5, recently spoke to Sky
Sports, where she stated that she was not surprised after seeing Draper lift the
ATP 1000 title in California.
“Berth inside the top-10 for the first time as well. Very
special moment for him,” she said. “What an achievement. Very happy for him.
Very hard working and its really nice to see the results come from the hard
work he puts in. I hate to say it out loud but I actually called it. May be not
from the start of the tournament but I did call it with my team. I felt like he
was building for a while. He was playing so well so it was just a matter of
time before his body kind of allowed him to be backing up these weeks. It feels
like he has really done that. Yea I think very highly of him so I am not surprised.”
