World number one
Carlos Alcaraz has revealed that he thought
he could not beat Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic before getting the better of him at
Wimbledon 2023.
The 20-year-old clinched the title at the third Grand Slam
of the year on Sunday in a five-set thriller with a score of 1–6, 7–6, 6–1,
3–6, 6–4 on Sunday.
Talking to the media after the match which lasted four hours
and 42 minutes, Alcaraz revealed an interesting fact.
“Yeah, I mean, before this match, I thought I can't beat
Novak,” he said. “That's obviously. After this epic match, let's say, yeah, I
think different about Novak in the way that probably in other tournaments, in
other Grand Slams, I will remember this moment.
“I will think that, well, I'm ready to play five sets
against him, good rallies, good sets, really long, long match, and stay there
physically, mentally, in tennis, in general. Probably it change my mind a
little bit after this match.”
The win on Sunday was indeed a special one considering the
fact that before this year, Alcaraz’s best outing at Wimbledon was the fourth-round
exit in 2022.
During the competition, the El Palmar-born defeated the French
duo of Jeremy Chardy, Alexandre Muller, Denmark’s Holger Rune and Russia’s Daniil
Medvedev in straight sets in the first-round, second-round, quarterfinal and
semifinal clashes.
