"I will play in Cincinnati as preparation": Djokovic drops clue about Canadian Open withdrawal in lead up to US Open

Serbia’s tennis star Novak Djokovic has hinted that he will
not take part in the Canadian Open this year.
The 36-year-old is set to return to the US Open after a
year’s break as he missed the last year’s competition after being denied entry into
the country due to the Covid-19 vaccination rule for foreigners.
It was anticipated that before going to New York, Djokovic
might play in the Canadian Open as a preparation for the mega-event.
However, the current world number two confirmed, while
talking to a Belgian media outlet, that the plan is to use Cincinnati Open as a
platform to prepare for the US Open. “Yes, that’s the plan for now. I will play
in Cincinnati as preparation for New York,” he said.
Djokovic will be hoping to return to winning ways after
suffering an exhausting defeat against the current world number one Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Wimbledon 2023 with a score of 1–6,
7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
That defeat ended his outstanding 34-match winning streak in
the competition which started from 2018 and during that phase, he ended up
winning four back-to-back titles in London.
That result also ended Djokovic’s hopes — at least for
another 12 months — of equaling Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon
titles. The former Swiss tennis star remains the most successful player in the
history of the competition.
Djokovic remains the joint-second most successful play in
Wimbledon’s history, having won the title seven times, equal with America’s
Pete Sampras.
