Novak Djokovic lookin ahead at the US Open
Novak Djokovic's hiatus away from the court prolongs after he confirmed another big tournament that he will not compete at. The 24-time Grand Slam champion announced that he will not return to the Madrid Open as he looks to complete his recovery ahead of the rest of the clay swing.
2026 has been very mixed for Djokovic, stunted by injury. He capitalised on fortune in his side of the draw in the Australian Open, puncing on injuries to Jakub Mensik and Lorenzo Musetti before defeating Jannik Sinner to reach the final of the event in Melbourne, falling short to Carlos Alcaraz despite his fine showing over those two matches.
He proved that he could compete among the best in the world as he continues to hunt for an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title. He pulled out of the Qatar Open with his sights firmly set on a return to Indian Wells. He was stunned in the fourth round against a rampant Jack Draper. This was the final time tennis fans have seen him on court to date.
The Serbian opted to travel back to Europe instead of competing in the Miami Open with a shoulder problem. The 38-year-old may be still extremely fit and in great condition, but his body is more susceptible to injury, leading to a more cautious approach when picking and choosing which tournaments he turns up to.

Djokovic's clay swing yet to get up and running

He was listed to compete in the prestigious Monte-Carlo Masters but chose to remain away from the court. He had the Madrid Open in his sights, looking to add a fourth title to kick off his clay swing in fine form.
This will no longer be the case. On X, he unveiled the news that the Madrid Open will be played without him for the fourth time in the last six years. "Madrid, unfortunately I won’t be able to compete Madrid Open this year," he wrote. "I’m continuing my recovery in order to be back soon. Hasta pronto!"
Djokovic's time on court this year has been very limited, offering a lot of reasons for his fans to be concerned. This could be a precautionary measure as he focuses on the four Grand Slam events. Roland Garros is next on the list set to be played from May 24 - June 7.

Novak Djokovic in action
He will be hoping to get to his imperious best for these tournaments as he looks to compete against Sinner and Alcaraz on the big stage once more. In between the tournaments in Madrid and Paris, the Rome Open will take place. This could be a tempting tournament for Djokovic to return to, or he could repeat the events of last year to an extent. After falling short in the second round in both Monte-Carlo and Madrid, Djokovic decided to skip Rome in favour of competing in the Geneva Open. The 250 event brought him his 100th ATP title in a historic moment. A comeback in Switzerland before the French Open could be tempting, but the second major event of 2026 is definitely the priority.
