Daniil
Medvedev is gunning for the title at the 2024
Australian Open and hopes to have
'third-time luck' after two previous final losses in Melbourne. The Russian
staged a remarkable comeback in a seemingly insurmountable match against
Alexander Zverev and will face
Jannik Sinner, who eliminated the 10-time AO
champion
Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.
In 2021,
Djokovic defeated Medvedev in the Australian Open final, the first in Australia
and the second in Djokovic's career. However, the Serbian dominated on the Rod
Laver Arena, securing a 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 victory. The following year, Medvedev had
another chance to win in Australia, entering as the reigning US Open champion
and the top favorite against Djokovic's consistent form in the main draw.
That year,
the surprise came from
Rafael Nadal, who, after several injuries in 2021,
showcased his best tennis at the beginning of 2022, winning the final with a
memorable comeback after being two sets down and facing a 2-3, 0-40 deficit in
the third set. The final result was 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in favor of the
Spanish player.
Medvedev is
seeking the title in his third attempt, this time against Jannik Sinner. In an
on-court interview, the Russian expressed his hope for luck in his third try:
'Well, first of all, we say third time lucky, so let's see. I can say by
experience, it's not always like this, but hopefully here it works,' he said.
"It
will mean a lot. Because I would say this court is not my best court in terms
of my performance and my actual self-esteem, I would say on the court and
that's why many times I had to dig deep during this tournament. So I'm gonna be
the happiest man on the planet," he added.
"Yeah,
[Jannik Siiner has been] impressive. As you say, 5-1 against Andrey Rublev, I
was sleeping at the time, at 5-1 on the tie-break against Andrey. Won the tie
break. 6-1, 6-3 against Novak who was 10-0 in the semifinals on this court.
Very impressive and I need to recover well, try to be 100% on Sunday. I hope
you guys can enjoy and we can have a great show," he opined.
