Jannik Sinner's career reached a new level since the episode where he vomited during the quarterfinal match against Grigor Dimitrov at the China Open. The 22-year-old Italian defeated the Bulgarian 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in one of the tournament's standout matches.
Despite the victory, during a changeover in the third set, when Sinner led 3-0, he called over a wheelie bin and vomited inside before returning to the match against Dimitrov. On that occasion, Sinner explained the situation: 'A very tough evening, the level was really high. I didn't feel very good, maybe I ate something wrong. At one point, I also threw up a little, but I'm happy with how I handled the situation.
The match took place on October 2, and since then, Sinner has been almost relentless in the challenges that came his way. "The Puke Effect" somewhat set a precedent before Sinner's significant breakthrough, establishing him as the best player in recent months.
"After Puke," Sinner boasts a record of 24-3 (88.8%) and a remarkable 11 victories against top-10 players. In just over three months, he secured three wins against the world No. 1 Novak Djokovic: first in the round-robin stage of the ATP Finals, then in the Davis Cup, and finally in the semifinals of the current 2024 Australian Open, ending Djokovic's six-year reign in Melbourne by 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3.
The Italian also claimed the trophies at the Beijing Open and Vienna Open, was the runner-up in the Finals (losing to Djokovic) and became the champion of the Davis Cup with Italy for the first time in almost 50 years. This week, he has already reached his first Grand Slam final and will challenge Daniil Medvedev for the title. In the head-to-head, Medvedev leads 6-3, although Sinner has won the last three encounters, all 'after puke' as well.
