Rafael Nadal spoke to Eurosport not long after his win against Medvedev and the Spaniard admitted to being very nervous after failing to serve out the match in the 5th set.
Nadal was up 5-4 in the 5th set of his match against Medvedev but the Russian was able to win that game. Asked by Tim Henman what was going on in his Nadal, the emotional Spaniard dropped an expletive while recalling a similar thing that happened in 2012 and 2017.
“F***, one more time I am a break up in the fifth and I am going to lose the advantage again like in 2012 and 2017. I said okay, I lost, I was nervous, I made a double fault, I made a mistake. So I need to keep fighting. I can lose the match and he can beat me, but I can’t give up even if I am destroyed. I need to stay strong mentally.”
Nadal was up a break in two finals he played here before but each time he went on to lose the match after losing the break. This time around he hung on to defeat Medvedev who had struggles of his own after playing for nearly five and a half hours.
Nadal further said:
“I can’t believe I resisted in a match like this after all the things I went through in the last months. I held the belief and it was one of the most emotional matches in my career. Today was for me and I fought a lot.”
