Daniil Medvedev will await the winner of Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev but by his own admission was left 'destroyed' by his battle with Hubert Hurkacz at the 2024 Australian Open speaking to John McEnroe post match.
Medvedev took down the Polish ace 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in just over four hours to book his spot in the last four amid a superb display from Hurkacz who certainly played his part in an epic battle on Rod Laver Arena. Posed the question by McEnroe on how he was managed to pull it off, he was quipped: “Incredible win. Physically mentally to pull that off. Tell this crowd you you were able to do it.”
To which Medvedev just responded: “I’m so destroyed right now.” Also after his Jim Courier masterclass post match on Eurosport about returning, he started to stand a lot closer and McEnroe asked if he was trying to put Hurkacz off.
“It was funny because after in the press conference, they were also asking me about the return. They were like ‘when do you decide to go forward? Are you gonna decide it?’ In my mind I knew that against Hubi, amazing serve and volley. He’s probably the only one where even if I stay really far back, the ball continues to go up. It doesn’t really go down. So it doesn’t really work to stay there. Talking to Jim, talking in the press conference, I was like ‘I know I’m gonna stay close. But I’m not gonna tell it to you guys right now."
