Stefanos
Tsitsipas commented that he hasn't learned how to manage his energy like Rafael
Nadal, Novak Djokovic, or Roger Federer in order to win a Grand Slam.
The Greek
tennis player has already reached two Grand Slam finals, the first one in the
2021 French Open and the second in the 2023 Australian Open, both resulting in
defeats against 'Nole' (Novak Djokovic). He has also made it to four
semifinals. Tsitsipas has maintained a consistent presence as one of the top
players for several years but has yet to secure that coveted Grand Slam title.
The former
world No. 3 is consistently regarded as one of the favorites in every Grand
Slam he competes in, but he has faced several disappointments and has struggled
to capitalize on his opportunities in crucial moments. Tsitsipas referred to
the Big-3 (Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer) as an example of his challenge:
“Win a Grand
Slam? I was close to succeeding in this challenge. I had my chances. Perhaps
what I lacked was energy. I use way too much on a court. If you look at other
champions like Djokovic, Federer & even Nadal, they know better how to
manage all the effort that a Grand Slam requires,” he said.
“The only
time in my career when I was smart enough to handle all of this well was at the
2019 Masters & I won it. It takes a long time to master this management.
But I’m still on the right track. I haven’t given up yet,” world No. 7 added.
Tsitsipas
is currently competing in the ATP 250 Amberes Open, where he holds the top
seed, and he will make his debut in the round of 16 against the Dutch player
Botic van de Zandschulp (67th). Despite a strong start to the year, the Greek
player's performance has declined, and he is yet to secure his spot in the ATP
Finals.
As of now,
he occupies the 6th spot in the ATP Race, but with several weeks and a Masters
1000 event on the horizon, he could potentially miss the tournament for the
first time in four years. He famously won the ATP Finals in his debut
appearance in 2019 at the age of just 21.
