Dominic Thiem made it to the quarter-final of the
Estoril Open but it still wasn't the result that he was capable of achieving on his favourite surface of the clay.
It was a step forward for the Austrian who largely disappointed so far this year but the positive signs will certainly help him move forward. He won two matches against two solid opponents and made his first quarter-final in months. The match he lost wasn't a very good one because as he noted after the match, he's still far too inconsistent for any big result:
“I’m still very inconsistent. Serve wasn’t here today. It’s still a positive week for me, first time in 7 months that I win back-to-back matches, which isn’t obviously a great stat”.
He'll try to improve his level over the next few weeks hoping for a good showing at Roland Garros. He needs to improve his ranking to even be able to play at the event but the former finalist is certain he can do it. Ultimately, he'll need to prove his words on the court, something he's not been able to do much so far this year.
