Novak
Djokovic responded to an interview in which he detailed that his primary goal
is to continue pursuing records. The 24-times Grand Slam champion was honest in
stating that his objectives include chasing records until the end of his
career. He emphasized the importance of being truthful with himself and others.
The Serbian
tennis player participated in an interview on the program "60
Minutes" and confirmed that, at 36 years old, it is significant for him to
continue striving for records. Djokovic is currently the world No. 1 and will
aim to surpass his 24 Grand Slam titles in the coming year, securing his
position as the all-time leader, ahead of Rafael Nadal with 22 and Roger
Federer with 20.
At 36 years
old, 'Nole' had an impressive 2023 season, winning three Grand Slam
tournaments: the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and the US Open. He only fell
short in the Wimbledon final, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic also
finished the year as the world No. 1 for the 8th time in his career, an
all-time record in the history of tennis.
“I mean,
for me, that’s completely normal. Like, being honest about it and being your
authentic self, and expressing what you feel. I’m just trying to be true to
myself and to others and say what my goals and objectives are. So it’s as
simple as that,” Djokovic said.
Djokovic's
2023 Season
Demonstrating
unparalleled consistency on the court, 'Nole' extended his record for the
highest career-winning percentage from 83.35% to 83.62%, accumulating a total
of 1087 victories and 213 defeats.
Djokovic
became the first player to achieve the career Grand Slam in men's singles,
previously only shared by Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, and Nadal, who had
accomplished the double Grand Slam. Additionally, he extended his record of 240
victories against top-10 ranked players to a total of 257.
He also
made history by surpassing the mark of 373 weeks as the world No. 1 in men's
tennis, surpassing Steffi Graf (across all genders) and setting a new record of
402 weeks at the top of the world rankings as of December 4, 2023.
