Stefanos Tsitsipas was playing superbly towards the back end of the 2023 season, but injury dealt its hand and he finished it heavily booed off at the ATP Finals.
Tsitsipas had to withdraw after facing Holger Rune and retiring after a few games. He thought he could play with it after his first match before realizing it was impossible. He was heavily booed off and there was a debacle then with Taylor Fritz himself injured playing an exhibition against Hubert Hurkacz where the former could hardly serve.
Speaking as the season comes to a close, he revealed that he was bedbound after that back injury and couldn't get out of bed as well as being metaphorically painful after working so hard to get to Turin for it to then have a sour end.
"The injury was painful – metaphorically painful because I wasn’t able to complete the last tournament of the year. So, it had a big toll on my body. For the next few days after the ATP Finals, I was struggling to wake up and get out of bed. In fact, the amount of pain I was going through for one to two weeks was very big," said Tsitsipas.
But the Greek is getting better and despite admitting that it will take some time, the road to recovery is starting to take shape as 2024 approaches.
"It’s looking better; I’m getting better. I’m doing a lot of things every single day to reduce the pain that I have as much as possible and as quickly as possible to get it back to normal. It will take a little bit of time. I’m still not 1000 per cent."
