America’s tennis star
Christopher Eubanks believes that
Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic is ahead of the former world number one Switzerland’s
Roger Federer in the GOAT debate.
The conversation has been underway for a very long time as to who is the greatest men’s singles tennis player out of Federer, Djokovic and
Spain’s
Rafael Nadal.
Eubanks was quoted in a report where he believes that
Djokovic has the numbers to be ahead of the other two.
“Yeah, I think so. Personally. In just my opinion. The thing
is GOAT conversations are so subjective,” he said. “It all depends on what you
like. Federer changed the way tennis players were viewed globally. He was a
global icon. In terms of just being a tennis player and titles, records, weeks
at being number one. He has the numbers.
“Some might say Federer meant more to the sport and I'm not
really going argue with you on that, if that's what your tennis GOAT means.
Mine is just the best all around tennis player. You can take a tennis player,
drop them on any surface against any opponent.”
In terms of pure numbers, Djokovic remains the most
successful player in the history of men’s singles tennis after winning 23 Grand
Slam titles. His most successful competition has been the Australian Open where
he has won 10 times.
On the other hand, Nadal has won the second-most number of
Grand Slams in the Open era — 22. His most successful tournament has been the
French Open where he lifted the title 14 times which also earned him the title
of the ‘King of Clay’.
Out of the three, Federer has the least number of Grand Slam
titles to his name — 20 — but what made him so special was that he became the
first ever to win more than 15 Grand Slams and was also the first to lift 20 or
more major titles in his career.
