India’s
Sumit Nagal registered history with his latest triumph
in the first round of the Monte-Carlos Masters. The 26-year-old produced the biggest
upset of the round of 64 as he defeated Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi with a score of
5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
With that result, Nagal becomes the first player from India
to register a win in the singles category in the ATP 1000 contest. This is not
the first time when the youngster managed to register a stunning win against a
renowned opponent.
Previously, he defeated Alexander Bublik in the opening
round of the Australian Open in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2, 7-6. However,
his journey was cut short in the first Grand Slam of the year as he lost in the
second round to China’s Shang Juncheng with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
Before coming to Monte-Carlo, Nagal defeated Frace’s Corentin
Moutet in the round of 32 of the Grand Prix Hassan II with a score of 4-6, 6-3,
6-2. He then lost to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the second round with a score of
1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
After the win, Nagal took to social media platform X — previously
known as Twitter — to express his happiness. “Happy to start with a win in
Monte Carlo, one of the most beautiful tennis venues in the world,” he wrote. The
Jhajjar-born will now face Denmark’s Holger Rune in the round of 32 of the mega-event
on Wednesday.
