Spain’s young tennis star
Carlos Alcaraz has labelled Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic a ‘superman’ despite beating him in the final of the
Wimbledon
2024. The third Grand Slam of the year ended on Sunday, where the Spaniard
successfully defended his title after defeating Serbia’s legendary tennis star in
straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
After the match, Alcaraz, while talking to the media, was
quoted in a report in which he called Djokovic a ‘superman’ for playing the final of the mega-event just weeks after having knee surgery. “I'm still believing that Novak is Superman because what he
has done this tournament with a surgery just a few weeks before the tournament
begun,” he said. “It is amazing. It is unbelievable. Honestly, as I said on
court, I was talking to my team that the work that Novak has done has been
unbelievable. Put himself the chance to be able to play the tournament and
making the final, it's something out of this world for me. I beat him today,
but for me Novak is still being like a Superman.”
Djokovic has gone through a difficult campaign. The
37-year-old, who is often regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s
tennis in the singles category in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand
Slam titles, suffered a knee injury in the French Open, which forced him to withdraw
just before the start of the quarterfinal against Norway’s Casper Ruud. After that injury, Djokovic had to undergo knee surgery, which put him in doubt about participating in mega events such as Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics.
On the other hand, the win at Wimbledon was a special one
for Alcaraz as this is the first time in his young career he has managed to win
two Grand Slams in a calendar year. Earlier, the 21-year-old lifted the French
Open after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final in a five-set thriller
with a score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2.
