Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic has revealed that he might be playing in front of the home crowd in the Davis Cup for ‘one last time’. The 37-year-old is regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic has recently joined the Serbian team ahead of their Davis Cup clash against Greece, which will be played on the 14th and 15th of September. Ahead of the contest, the former world number one announced that it would probably be the ‘last time’ he would play in front of the home crowd in the Davis Cup and that he was looking to ‘enjoy’ it. “I don't have any plans, only in the Davis Cup,” he said. “I really just want to enjoy it because depending on the format and how things go in the coming years, it might be the last one in front of the home crowd in Davis Cup, so I'll enjoy that.”
Djokovic also went on to talk about his season, where he stated that, in his opinion, he will be in much better shape next season to win more accolades. The Belgrade-born star also highlighted that this season, his only objective was to win an Olympic gold medal, and he is very proud of himself for achieving that.
“It's not a guarantee if I'm 100 percent ready that I can win anything,” he said. “Naturally, the chances are much higher. It's always important to give credit to all the other tennis players who play at the top level, everything has to be deserved. Every year is a challenge for me. Gold was the main goal of this season, everything I've been in my Olympic career so far and those defeats that have affected me, taking everything into account it's the biggest success and something I'm most proud of.”
Djokovic completed his trophy cabinet earlier this year when he won the Olympic gold medal after beating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the singles event in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6.
