Former Argentine tennis player
Juan Martin del Potro revealed that seeing Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic win the Olympic gold medal made him cry. The 37-year-old is often regarded as the greatest player in the
history of men’s tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam
titles in his illustrious career.
Djokovic recently participated in the Paris Olympics where
he finally won something that was missing from his trophy cabinet which was the
gold medal for his country in the mega-event. The Belgrade-born star finally managed
to achieve that after beating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final in straight
sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6.
After that match, Djokovic was clearly emotional as he burst
into tears on the court and showed exactly how much it meant to him. Del Potro,
after sharing the court with the former world number one ahead of the fourth and
final Grand Slam of the year, was quoted in a report where he stated that
seeing Djokovic win an Olympic gold for his country made him emotional. “He
made me cry the other day when he won the gold medal. It was the first tennis
match that I cried,” he said.
The victory was special for Djokovic because he had suffered a knee injury just a few weeks before during the French Open. That injury forced Serbia’s legendary tennis star to withdraw from the second Grand Slam of
the year just before the start of the quarterfinal against Norway’s Casper
Ruud. Following that, Djokovic underwent surgery, which raised doubts about his participation in future mega events such as Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics. However, the 24-time Grand Slam winner not only returned to the court
soon after but also went all the way to the final of Wimbledon. In that
competition, he lost to Alcaraz in the final in straight sets with a score of
7-6, 7-6.
