Daniil Medvedev declined to disclose his vaccination status ahead of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells but he also said he wants to play the
Australian Open.
Vaccination in the tennis world has been a polarizing issue that split the community in half. Estimates have vaccination among tennis professionals at about 50 % and with the Australian Open slowly approaching the topic has become prominent again. The event will require players to be vaccinated in order to compete at it due to the strict pandemic rules enforced in Australia.
That in itself is an issue as many tennis players have not been vaccinated yet with many expressing scepticism and unwillingness to do so. Notable names that have previously stated they won't be getting vaccinated are Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev to name a few. Medvedev himself had COVID earlier this year and asked about his vaccination status he said:
"It's a personal thing. I am not going to discuss my medical issues."
Asked about the Australian Open Medvedev said he wants to play the event noting that he was happy to comply with the rules:
"But I am prepared to play the Australian Open and will even do 2 weeks quarantine if needed."
It remains to be seen how the whole situation will unfold and how players react to the mandatory vaccination requirement. If the rules don't change those who play are vaccinated and those who skip it were not and they weren't ready to do so.
