World number one Serbia’s legendary tennis player Novak
Djokovic has revealed the reason behind playing in the doubles category of the
Paris Masters.
The 36-year-old, who is often regarded as the greatest
player in the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era having won as many
as 24 Grand Slam titles in his career, is currently playing in the event in two
different categories.
In the doubles event, he is partnering with fellow
countryman Miomir Kecmanovic.
Djokovic was quoted in a report recently where he revealed
that the reason behind playing in the doubles category is to prepare for the
Davis Cup quarterfinal against Great Britain.
“Yes it is," he said when asked whether playing in a
team category is a part of the preparation for the upcoming Davis Cup. "Actually
it’s the main reason why we are playing here is trying to prepare for Davis Cup
and have another I guess doubles pair, doubles combination that we can rely on.
"Obviously not ideal for the format of the Davis Cup
that we have nowadays where it’s really decisive. If you split wins after
singles, doubles decides and we play Great Britain that obviously has had for
decades the best doubles players in the world. So it’s going to be very tough
and that’s why we’re trying to get as much of the doubles match play as we
possibly can."
Djokovic and Kecmanovic won the round of 32 clash against Aleksandr
Nedovyesov and Gonzalo Escobar in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
They are now set to face off against the pair of India’s Rohan
Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden in the round of 16 clash on Wednesday.
Djokovic will also
start his singles category campaign when he will face Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry
in the round of 32 clash on Wednesday.
