Iga Swiatek has opened up on the truth behind the dress code at the 2023 WTA Finals gala in Cancun and the reason for her decision to wear a red dress while all her fellow players wore white.
The four-time Grand Slam champion has made a strong start to her campaign at the 2023 WTA Finals, defeating Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-0.
However, ahead of the tournament fans were left confused by Swiatek's outfit for the WTA Finals gala. The Polish player wore a red dress designed by Magda Butrym and worth $1947. The reason for the confusion was due to the fact that her seven competitors all donned white for the occasion.

Swiatek reveals she asked for rule change

After photos of the gala were released, Ellen Perez (who is competing at the tournament in doubles), suggested that the confusion was due to the event changing their dress code.
"Cancuns dress code is a hot mess. Went from all white to colors allowed to casual not too formal but with the request it be tropical. So honestly the message has been so mixed up I pray," she wrote on X.
However, Swiatek shed more light on the situation after her win against Vondrousova.
"Honestly, there was no story. I picked the dress a couple of months before and then WTA emailed us that we should all wear white and we were like ‘Really? We’re not getting married or something," she said in an interview with Tennis Channel.
"So we asked them if it’s possible to not have that rule and they literally sent an email a couple of hours later saying, ‘It’s okay you can kind of wear whatever you want," she continued.
The 22-year-old added that she had been told that more players other than herself would not be wearing white.
"I think most of the girls, maybe they thought the rule is still on or something but I’m not sure. I think it was a full coincidence because the day before we asked, I didn’t talk to the girls, but we asked like overall what they’re going to wear and they told us four girls are going to wear white so I didn’t know I’m going to be the only one," she said.
