Andy Roddick impressed by
Carlos Alcaraz's high level at the
Laver Cup. The 2003 US Open champion spoke in the latest episode of his podcast Served with Roddick about the Spanish player's great return to the courts after his surprising loss at the US Open.
The Spaniard entered the tournament in Flushing Meadows as a favourite and seemed to have no issues advancing through the rounds, especially after the draw was announced, which allowed him to avoid opponents like Sinner and Medvedev until the semifinals and Djokovic and Zverev until a potential final.
However, he couldn’t display the level he had shown in recent months, with titles at the French Open and Wimbledon, along with a silver medal at the Olympic Games. Alcaraz ended up falling in the second round of the US Open against world No. 78 Botic van de Zandschulp.
Nearly four weeks passed before we saw Alcaraz back on the court, in none other than the Laver Cup, where he led Team Europe to its fifth title after eight editions. It was Alcaraz's debut in the tournament driven by Roger Federer, and he was filled with praise after achieving several crucial victories for his team.
“I was amazed at how many players, without even flinching, just said the best top level in tennis right now is Carlos Alcaraz,” commented Andy Roddick on his podcast. “Without even a hiccup, no flinching at all; they feel like there are more days when he's a little bit more like a heart rate monitor, if he hasn't quite found it. But the general feeling seems to be that once he finds it and has it, you have a massive problem.”
“It was good to see him back. It was good to see him take over, like watching him play doubles and flying around the court,” the former world No. 1 added. “He has unbelievable doubles instincts! Oh my gosh, if you watch him play doubles and then go to just a regular tour event, it's different gravy. He is unbelievable on a doubles court; you can't get away from him. I mean, it's phenomenal, and it shows you how great his instincts are for tennis in general.”
