Ons Jabeur raised an issue with the Wimbledon rule regarding dark-colored underwear.
The traditional rules of Wimbledon required female players to dress entirely in white, which caused anxiety for several women who had concerns about wearing white clothing during their menstrual cycle. This year, the rule has been relaxed to allow the use of dark-colored underwear.
The world No. 6 Ons Jabeur expressed her concern regarding the rule
“There is two things. One thing, it’s better definitely not to be paranoid,”
“And the other thing, everybody will know that you have your period. So I’m not sure which part of it is good,”
“I mean I don’t think I’m going to wear anything. If all the girls will wear it, I think it will make it better. But I think it’s a great thing that Wimbledon is trying to help women feel more comfortable on the court,” she added.
In November 2022, the All England Club announced the change in the rule.
“It is our hope that this rule adjustment will help players focus purely on their performance by relieving a potential source of anxiety.”
Before that date, the rule at Wimbledon required the use of white underwear.
“Any undergarments that either are or can be visible during play (including due to perspiration) must also be completely white except for a single trim of colour no wider than one centimetre (10mm).”
Previously, Australian tennis player Daria Saville commented on this issue and her experience during Wimbledon.
“It's true, I myself had to skip my period around Wimbledon for the reason that I didn't want to worry about bleeding through. We already have enough stress,” she said.
