Tennis star Jack Draper took home his first ATP Masters title at Indian Wells last week, and the Brit thousands of well-wishes from fans and players alike, including compatriot Andy Murray.
Draper made short work of Holger Rune in clinical fashion on Sunday's final, recording an easy 6-2 6-2 victory to capture the biggest title of his career. The Sutton native defeated several top stars en route to the final, including World No.4 Taylor Fritz and reigning Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz before overcoming Rune in an exciting final.
Murray among several to congratulate the rising star
Following his victory, Draper rose to a new career-high ranking of World No.7. The 23-year old was swarmed with congratulatory messages from several fans on social media. However, Draper seemed extremely pleased to receive some kind words via text message from fellow Brit and three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.
"I got a message from Andy to say congratulations," said Draper in an interview with the LTA. "I saw he reposted that video of me drinking beer and annoying him on the way home from Davis Cup. "I think it’s amazing to have all these people who have supported me over the years and I’ve been inspired by watching me and giving me a lot of love."
Draper has a shot of winning the Sunshine Double, as he kicks off his Miami Open campaign with an opening round match against Czech star Jakub Mensik.
Growing up in a household where soccer was king, my earliest memories are filled with chants from packed stadiums and the rhythm of a ball being passed across neighborhood streets. But somewhere along the way, the quiet elegance and raw emotion of tennis pulled me in. What began as a curiosity became a lifelong passion; not just for the sport itself, but for the stories it tells: of grit, of heartbreak, of improbable comebacks and human resilience.
As a tennis writer, I bring the observational lens of someone who didn’t grow up in the sport, but fell in love with it as an outsider; a perspective that lets me see both its technical beauty and its emotional depth. Over the years working with TennisUpToDate, I’ve had the privilege of reaching more than 3.5 million readers worldwide, with one of my features ranking among the site’s top three articles.
With a background in storytelling and a creative mind always searching for meaning beyond the scoreboard, I aim to craft narratives that go deeper than results and rankings. Whether it’s a rising star breaking through or a veteran fighting off Father Time, I try to capture the heartbeat behind the headlines.
