Novak Djokovic sets a new record in the Masters 1000 by becoming the player with the most matches played. The former World No. 1 has now established himself as the player with the most remarkable career in these tournaments, after reaching 501 matches played.
He did so in the best way possible, securing a victory against Rinky Hijikata 6-0, 7-6(3), overcoming three consecutive losses and advancing to the third round of the Miami Open, six years after his last appearance.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion has now played 501 main draw matches, breaking his tie with Rafael Nadal, who had 500 matches. The top-5 includes Roger Federer (489), Andy Murray (331), and David Ferrer (311).
Djokovic is not only the player with the most matches played, but he is also the greatest champion of Masters 1000 titles (40), being the only player in history to win every Masters title at least twice.
Additionally, he is now just one win away from matching Nadal’s record for the most victories (now tied with 410 wins). Nadal ended his career with a 410-90 record in Masters 1000, while Djokovic has a 410-91 record, reflecting the incredible rivalry they held for 15 years.
Djokovic now prepares for his next challenge in the tournament against the surprise Camilo Ugo Carabelli, a lucky loser who has already knocked out local players Brandon Holt and 32nd seed Alex Michelsen.
