Jan-Lennard Struff continued his spectacular year by upsetting
Stefanos Tsitsipas at the
Madrid Open beating him in three sets 7-6(5) 5-7 6-3.
Struff has been one of the most consistent performers this year winning matches both on the Challenger Tour earlier this year but also on the ATP Tour. It comes after the German struggled with his tennis for much of last year dropping out of the top 100. This win is a surprising one but it's unexpected as he did something like this in Monte-Carlo already.
His serve is a major weapon and he utilized it today well to frustrate Tsitsipas who can be vulnerable against really great servers. The first set went to Struff in a close tiebreak where he outplayed Tsitsipsa by a fraction. It wasn't a bad set by Tsitsipas as he didn't allow a single break point but Struff had 10 winners more and only 3 errors more.
It was more than enough to win the set. The second one saw Tsitsipas storm back as he used the only bad service game Struff played to break him and win the set 7-5. It was a masterclass of tennis from Tsitsipas who had 16 winners and only 3 errors, a much better mark than that of Struff. That flipped in the final set as this time around Struff did the same.
He had 15 winners and only one unforced error which was better than 8 and 1 from Tsitsipas.
