Stefanos Tsitsipas talked about winning this event a few days ago but he stumbled at the first serious obstacle losing to
Jannik Sinner 4-6 3-6.
A few weeks ago Tsitsipas defeated Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open but this time around it was the Italian who got the better of the Greek. It was an okay match from both sides but Tsitsipas did not have his serve today and it was the key to victory. Due to Sinner's massive baseline game, Tsitsipas needed his serve to break the rhythm of the Italian and to win a lot of free points.
He served only one ace and that was about 15 short of what he needed to win this match. He also had 3 double faults which happened due to him chasing some aggressive serves at times because he simply couldn't hit it as well as he needed to. Somewhat predictably, the Italian was the better one in rallies.
Sinner smashed the ball really well, something he did in Australia as well. He didn't have a problem returning the ball which was crucial as it evened out the playing field. One break in each set was enough for a good win for Sinner as he simply was the much better player today. Well deserved win.
