Jannik
Sinner continues his excellent form, defeating
Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-3, 6-0 to
advance to the third round of
Indian Wells. The Italian maintains his perfect
streak in 2024, securing his 16th consecutive triumph. He has won 26 of his
past 27 matches overall.
The
impeccable form of the 22-year-old athlete claimed another victim in the form
of the Australian world No. 99. While Kokkinakis stood his ground for a
significant part of the first set, he ultimately couldn't keep up with his
opponent, who displayed the level to which fans are accustomed.
The first
break point was for Kokkinakis, but Sinner didn't allow it to cost him and
saved it with an excellent first serve. The early games of the match saw the
Australian somewhat more secure with his serve, but with the score at 4-3 in
favor of Sinner, the Italian secured a break with an impeccable forehand down
the line.
From that
point onward, Sinner didn't let up, winning consecutive games, going from 3-3
to the end of the match at 6-3, 6-0, at times making himself unplayable for his
opponent.
In an
impeccable second set, Sinner showcased his dominance, winning 83% of the
points played and committing no unforced errors compared to six from
Kokkinakis, who unfortunately couldn't sustain the level of the early games.
With this
result,
Jannik Sinner advances to the third round of the tournament and will
face the winner of the match between the 25th seed Jan-Lennard Struff and Borna
Coric. Sinner defends his semifinal appearance from the previous year (where he
was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz). Now he has the opportunity to challenge the
Spanish world No. 2, needing to reach the same round as Alcaraz or advance
further in the tournament.
