Juan Martin Del Potro got an invitation to play at this year's
US Open last year and he's hopeful of making it as he returns to the courts for some practice.
Del Potro retired from tennis in 2022 with an emotional goodbye in Buenos Aires at the Argentina Open. Injuries have made it impossible for him to continue despite multiple surgeries and plenty of hope about making a return to the sport. He was honoured at the US Open as a special guest last year with an invitation to play at the event this year if he wants it.
It seems like he's going to give it a shot considering the US Open will forever be special to him as it's the only grand slam he ever won in his career. He confirmed his intentions in a recent interview:
“I love tennis, it will never be a problem to pick up a racquet and
see how I feel. The physical problem and my knee are things I work on
every day. I’m going to leave that window open, at least until the US
Open as I said. This is the most special tournament for me. I still have
time, I will start training, see how my leg and knee react and if I can
do it or not."
